“Bernadette was a peasant girl who suffered from severe chronic asthma her whole life resulting in tuberculosis of the lungs and bones. Ironically her visions led to the shrine at Lourdes becoming a center for healing. Bernadette is seldom depicted in devotional images apart from her apparitions at the grotto at Massabielle. I wanted to depict her as a courageous young woman in her own right, as one whose extraordinary experiences did not absent her from sharing in the human experience of suffering and joy. In her last years at the convent in Nevers she was often brought out, against her wishes, to be on display for visiting dignitaries or to be photographed. The photograph on which this image was based, was taken during this time (she was asked to dress in her native costume for the photo session). During this pandemic we come face to face with our inability to control life, either our own or the lives of others. Faith, which is the opposite of control, moves us to the same surrender and trust in God exemplified by Bernadette.”
