The Gospel of John – Video on Demand

April 11 - April 13, 2020

Additional Performances:

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5)

During this Easter weekend, the triumphant culmination of this most sacred week on the Christian calendar, experience the eyewitness account of our Lord, Jesus Christ, as it may originally have been proclaimed. The Sheen Center presents the video premiere of the final performance of The Gospel of John, conceived and performed by Ken Jennings. The video will be available, with our compliments, on this page and on our YouTube channel from 4:00 p.m. on Holy Saturday, April 11 to the end of Easter Monday, April 13.

Audiences thrilled to Broadway veteran Ken Jennings’ (Sweeney Todd, Grand Hotel, Side Show) performance of The Gospel of John. Directed by John Pietrowski, Jennings brought the Gospel powerfully to life in a thrilling 90-minute solo performance that we are pleased to share with you this Easter.

“I memorized this first as a prayer, not as a play,” said Jennings. “Memorizing The Gospel of John was a spiritual practice during a difficult time in my life. I’ve always had an affinity for John, which seems to be a truly firsthand narrative by a man who was actually there.”

St. John’s Gospel is breathtakingly poetic, containing soaring theology, yet it is filled from start to finish with eyewitness details that came from John’s life with Jesus. This written testimony from John’s personal experience has been proclaimed all over the world for millennia. Jennings told it to audiences as if for the first time, as it was originally told by the Beloved Disciple – so that they too may have a personal encounter with Jesus during this Easter season

“Plays can bring spiritual solace. On the unadorned stage, two flights below Bleecker Street, the actor Ken Jennings had only a single prop: a compact Bible. When theater is a religious experience, faith has a powerful role.” – The New York Times

“Jennings’ presentation is very personal, profoundly felt. A heartfelt and captivating performance. The Sheen’s production of The Gospel of John offers a gripping narrative conveyed by a compelling actor, who captures the exquisite beauty of its language and brings immediacy and understanding to the age-old story.”  – DC Metro Arts
