Page Meets Stage with Sharon Olds & Ocean Vuong
Sunday, October 28, 2018 @ 6PM
The iconic Sharon Olds meets one of her star former students at NYU, Ocean Vuong, and the two trade poems all night long. Hosted by Taylor Mali. The series, often called “where the Pulitzer Prize meets the poetry slam,” is like no other poetry reading series anywhere, brings together two different poets, one who writes primarily for the page and another who is more performance oriented. The two poets take the stage together and read back and forth, poem for poem. It is not a slam or competition in any way, but an ongoing conversation about where poetry thrives. SHARON OLDS is one of contemporary poetry’s leading voices. Winner of several prestigious awards, including the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award, Olds is known for writing intensely personal, emotionally scathing poetry which graphically depicts family life as well as global political events. Born in Saigon, poet and editor OCEAN VUONG was raised in Hartford, Connecticut, and earned a BA at Brooklyn College. In his poems, he often explores transformation, desire, and violent loss. In 2014, Vuong was awarded a Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry fellowship from the Poetry Foundation. He received a Whiting Award in 2016.
