Black Mothers and Their Sons

Wednesday, June 10, 2020 @ 3PM

Sheen Center Interim Executive Director David Di Certo talks with actress and playwright Angela Polite about her play Mary Speaks and what it means to be an artist of faith and an artist of color at such a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. The playwright explores the history of Black mothers and their sons in America, through a spiritual Marian lens. In the person of the Blessed Mother, the artist finds inspiration for the struggle of all Black mothers working to raise and keep their sons alive in a hostile world, infusing the historical journey from slavery to the present day with the redemptive resonance of a mother’s love.
