Event Details
Living Reflections was originally inspired by a conversation between the artist and his father. Tongyi’s father said, "No one will ever fully understand who you are, what you've been through, except for you. So be good to yourself, be the person you always want to be, because you are the most important person in your life." Living Reflections combines two series that explore this fatherly advice: To Live and Meditations. Inspired by Yu Hua’s novel of the same title, To Live, illustrates the struggles and accomplishments of Fugui and his daughter, Fengxia. Through popping colors and loose watercolor marks, we glimpse moments of happiness and loss, while ultimately understanding the characters’ enduring will to live even in the face of great adversity. Meditations is an animation that begins with a figure masking himself in Peking opera makeup. Through a journey of self-discovery and acceptance, the figure washes the makeup away to see his true self in the water's reflections.
Celebrate this exhibit with us at our Artist's Reception on February 4th from 5-7PM in our Dilenschneider Gallery. This is a free event, but RSVP is required.
